Below are the national anthems for both Australia and Canada. Ash and I were discussing the lyrics (which he correctly identified) and how they sounded compared to the Australian anthem.
On a site that I was reading when looking for both, the comment was made that the only anthem worse than Australia's was Canada's anthem. I don't agree.
Meanwhile, Megan our little Canalian as she called herself the other evening at dinner time (known as supper here) recognised the Canadian anthem but NOT the Australian anthem!
I confess that I know more of the words to the Canadian anthem already than I do for the Australian anthem. the reason is twofold actually;
1. The Canadian anthem is simple, clear and concise, the Australian anthem is not.
2. The Canadian anthem is played EVERYDAY at all schools to start the day and ALL students know to stop and stand in response to it being played. None of the Australian schools that I have taught in do this.
What is the value? National pride builds national unity. When times get tough national pride is what keeps you where you are and national unity makes you want better for your community. It is a modern day social religion.
well, listened to them both. Still, as always get the shivers up the spine when hearing our anthem and as usual quite proudly sang it out loud gawking at my computer (with my deaf dog looking at me like Im a feak!). Must be Aussie pride no doubt. Was at the Adelaide Cup on Monday and did notice when the anthem came on that I saw 'no one' joining in. However I did and not even alcohol induced (that was later!).
ReplyDeleteLike the Canadian one too, yes it's simpler but crickey matey how do they reach the high notes at the end - maybe it's the cold conditions that help achieve that?? (private parts and all that frozen??)
not sue why my name came up l&?? Its Hels!!
