Grand Canyon to San Diego

We awoke in the Grand Canyon campgrounds to a heavy blanket of snow - the heaviest we had seen in our trailer. It certainly made decamping an interesting experience. We had to shake snow off the bed ends, sweep it away from the car windows and repeat the whole process over and over as we packed up. In the end we had very little melted snow in the trailer which was a relief.

Morning in Grand canyon campsite.

Snow! What snow?

Final packing up.

Snow build up after 30 minutes.

The road out.

The drive out from the park was a little worrisome too with all of  the snow on the roads. The snowplows had not cleared our roads by the time we left and so Jill drove through along a snow covered road with a trailer behind. Whenever we had to stop, it was touch and go as to whether we could get enough traction to move on again.
By later in the day we were out of the snow and into the rain and then into the dry again. We passed close to the Mexican border as we drove across Arizona and into California to San Diego.
This where people go BEFORE the Las Vegas wedding chapels.

We thought Yuma was only a movie place.

Part of the city of Yuma.

The dark line across the dunes is the US border wall to stop illegal Mexicans.

One of two border patrol checkpoints.

As we drove away from this checkpoint where every car was scrutinized, we noticed a guy walking along a side track behind the checkpoint looking Mexican and carrying a large backpack. I imagined him thinking to himself, "Those seelly Americens! They didn't see me!! I so sneeky!"Heehehe.

Part of a rock only landscape that existed for a while.

Another wind farm.

The second border control point - complete with sniffer dog.

Why the checkpoints exist.
Eventually we arrived in San Diego and stayed in a RV park that was only 3 km from the Mexican border - making it very tempting to cross. Instead we drove to La Jolla Cove (because it was free) to enjoy the sights.

Northern hemisphere pelicans.

He didn't make it!

See, sea.

Another one who didn't make it

Sea lions at La Jolla cove.

Exploring the rockpools.

You can get close to the sea lions.

We were THIS close to going into Mexico.

So close yet so far.
After a conversation with a resident at the park we thought better of entering Mexico. Later the same sentiments were expressed by another women who had been there often in the past but not anymore.
We will never know.
